Oral picture: Grandpa in Hospital

Oral Picture : In the Hospital
Introduction Setting

This picture shows a scene at a hospital ward.

Scenario 1 a) – Normal
a) Describe what I see in the picture

Grandpa is lying on the hospital bed with his leg in a cast. A nurse is beside him, checking whether he is recovering well. Grandpa seems to be recovering fast as he nodded his head to the nurse to express that he was alright.

b) Personal Response

I think that the nurse is efficient as not all nurses are willing to ask or check on their patients.

Scenario 1 a) – Wrong and consequence

A boy and a girl are playing catching in the ward. They might be siblings.

b) Personal Response

I feel that they are not respecting their Grandfather in bed. They will also disturb other patients in other wards.

c) Consequence

Their mother, who is sitting on the chair beside Grandpa’s hospital bed, looks very angry. She is fuming mad. She could be going to scold them and tell them about the importance of being respectful to their elder resting on the hospital bed.

Conclusion

When we visit a patient in the hospital, we should not play or make too much noise as to allow the patients to get enough rest.

Oral Picture: Staircase

Oral Picture : Safety and Cosideration

Introduction Setting

This picture shows a scene at a staircase.

Scenario 1 a) – Wrong and Consequence + Cause and Effect

a) Describe what I see in the picture(Wrong and Cause)

A boy in school uniform had dashed down the staircase and knocked against a teacher who was carrying a lot of books. He was also going to knock against another teacher who was carrying a cup of hot drink.

b) Effect

Both the teachers have a very worried look. Some of the books carried by the teacher had fallen of onto the staircase and two students in uniform picked up the books for her.

c) Consequence

The hot drink in the hand of one of the teachers might be dropped onto the staircase, causing the drink to splatter onto others clothes and dirty the staircase. The boy running down the staircase could be rushing off for something important but I think that he should not run down the staircase. If the bump against the teachers or someone else was serious, that person would get injured.

Conclusion

When going down or up the staircase, we should always be considerate to give way to others and follow the rules for safety.

Oral Picture: Monkey Bar

Oral Picture : At the beach
Introduction Setting

This picture shows a scene at Yu Yang Primary School’s Fitness Corner. It might be after school time as there is not much students at the fitness corner. These students could be staying back to play.

Scenario 1 a) – Wrong and Consequence
a) Describe what I see in the picture

Two boys are playing soccer. Their expressions on their faces shows that they are having a great time exercising their legs.

b) Personal Response

I think that they should not play soccer in the fitness corner as there are many obstructions. If they accidentally kicked the soccer ball too hard and it is possible that it will hit someone and that person would get injured. I suggest them to go to an open field or a spacious area with no obstructions instead.

Scenario 1 b) – Cause and effect
a) Describe what I see in the picture (Cause)

A girl who has fallen from the monkey bars is wailing in pain. Her right elbow has a bruise and is bleeding profusely.

b) Describe what I see in the picture (Effect)

A boy is running towards her frantically. He is concern about her and is reaching his hands to help her up. I am sure he is going to report her to the teacher in the general office to inform her parents and bandage her wound.

Another boy hanging onto the monkey bar looks worried. He could be afraid of falling off onto the girl as the girl is just under him. He is trying his best to hang on. If I were him, I would do my best to hang on even if I cannot hold on to the monkey bar any longer. I will wait for the other boy to bring the girl away first.

Conclusion

The fitness corner is where students exercise. We should all be extra careful to avoid any mishaps or accidents. Safety comes first when playing.

Oral speech - Beach

Oral Picture : At the beach

Introduction Setting

This picture shows a scene at the beach. There are many people enjoying themselves on the love and beautiful beach.

Scenario 1 a) – Wrong and Consequence

a) Describe what I see in the picture

Two boys are playing beach ball beside the sea. They are having fun together without any adult supervision.

b) Personal Response

I think that their actions are dangerous as they are just beside the sea. If they did not manage to catch the beach ball, the ball might fall and float into the sea. It might float quite far and the boys will swim in the sea to retrieve their ball. Without adult supervision, they might not be able to swim properly as the current might be too strong that they might drown. Their parents are also part of the responsibility to watch out for them.

Scenario 1 b) – Wrong and Consequence

a) Describe what I see in the picture

Next to them are a boy and a girl, who are swimming in the sea. They might be siblings. (establish relationship)

b) Personal Response

I feel that their actions are also dangerous as swimming in the sea alone is unsafe. I believe that they do not know the rules for safety at the beach. There is no lifeguard on the sea to save them if they are lost or drowning in the sea. Their parents are also part of the responsibility of watching over them.

Scenario 2 a) – Normal

b) Describe what I see in the picture

A boy and two girls are playing sandcastle. The boy is carrying a pail of water towards the two girls. They have made a nice sandcastle and have decorated it with seashells.

a)Personal Response

They must have worked very hard to build this beautiful sandcastle. It is not easy as I have experienced it before and I know that it is very difficult to make a good sandcastle.

Scenario 2 b) – Normal

b) Describe what I see in the picture

A girl is listening to an adult play the guitar. The adult might be her mother. (establish relationship)

b)Personal Response

I guess that the girl’s mother is a good guitar player as the girl is clapping for her mother with a wide smile on her face. I think she is trying to tell her mother that the song she played was excellent.

Conclusion

The beach is a place where tourists and families can go to enjoy. We should enjoy the peace and tranquility instead of doing dangerous things just like the siblings in the picture.

Oral Picture: Grandpa's Birthday Celebration

Oral Picture : Grandpa’s Birthday Celebration

Introduction Setting

This picture shows a scene of Grandpa’s birthday celebration. It seems to be a very happy birthday celebration.

Scenario 1 a) – Normal

a) Describe what I see in the picture

A short row of children are lining up, waiting to give their presents to an old man sitting on a chair at the front of the queue. The old man must be their grandfather who is celebrating his 80th birthday. An old lady is standing beside him. She might be his wife.

b)Personal Response

From their facial expressions, the children seems to be delighted and eager to wish their grandfather happy birthday. If I were them, I would also feel the same way although I do not have a grandfather.

Scenario 1 b) – Wrong and Consequence

a) Describe what I see in the picture

Two boys are fighting over the present they are supposed to give to their grandfather. They might be brothers as there is only one present for them to give.

b) Personal Response

I think that they are being disrespectful to their grandfather as they are creating a ruckus over a small matter. They should just give the present together. It would be more appropriate and respectful.

Consequence

Their grandfather might get angry and will not be able to enjoy his birthday. Their parents might also scold them for being disrespectful to their elder on such a happy occasion.

Scenario 2 a) – Normal

a) Describe what I see in the picture

There is a whole row of delicious and scrumptious looking food on a long table. There are people around, scooping food from trays and bowls. There is also a big cake stating “Happy birthday Grandpa”. It is decorated with cherries around it.

b)Personal Response

This must be a special birthday for grandfather as it is a big celebration with scrumptious food and the whole gamily are celebrating.

Conclusion

This is definitely a great birthday celebration. We should avoid any unnecessary dispute and enjoy the birthday celebration. I have joined many birthday celebrations and most of them does not have any dispute.

Superkids 3-days Camp reflection

The time passes so fast, the superkids 3-days camp has pass by about 2 weeks. Although I am going blog about it after quite a long time, I want to test myself whether I still remember about it.

I still remember that I was very excited and was eager to join this 3-day camp. When I first saw our class trainer, who was Candice and YY, I thought that she was a very smart person as she is part of the Adam Khoo's programme. In fact, I thought that all trainers were intelligent. To my surprise, they all started out badly but ended greatly. That was when I thought, success always begins with failure.

On the first day, Candice had shared with us about the people around us and the standard they are at. Then she asked us, " Where do you want to be when we grow up? Do you want to be a low standard pay worker or a person who holds a high place with a good/enough pay ?"(not exactly what she said, about the same.) I told myself that I would definitely not become the person to have a low standard pay. As soon as I wrote down who I want to become, Candice mentioned again that success will only be with us if we are willing to work hard. She taught us the ultimate success formula which I think is quite useful.

She also shared with us the story about the story of the Eagles and the Sheeps. The Eagles are the hardworking ones who chooses to try and spread their wings and fly when it is time to leave their nest. The Sheeps, as what we call it, "The Followers" are the ones that will

follow blindly.

Of course, no one would choose the Sheeps unless they do not want to be successful in life. The Eagle are our choices, we have to be like them to do our best and fly out of the nest to find a better place to live.

She also told us the rules for success. They are:

Success rule no. 1: Do it Fast

Do it Right

Do it Now

Success rule no. 2: What you have

Who you become

Success rule no. 3: Success=Moving towards your goal everyday

No failure, only learning experience.

Later on that day, YY came in and introduced himself. He told us the story about how his name came about. Next, he told us about our brain. I learnt that there are 1,000,000,000,000 neurons in our brain. It was so amazing! I never thought that our brain would have so many neurons. Other animals or insects, like the Honey Bee, has only 7,000 neurons.

He then gave us an assignment of memorizing 30 words in two days time. We had to memorize it in the speed of 6 seconds or below in order to pass this test. At the end of the day, he showed us a short movie of about 45 minutes about a man, named Rocky, who created the movie. He told us that Rocky was unfortunate as he was born a little bit different from others. Despite his looks, Rocky did not give up on his dream of being an actor. He went up to many directors to allow him to act in their movie, but all rejected him until the last director gave him 200 dollars to create his own movie.

Rocky's movie was about him, being the main actor, acting as a boxer. In his first movie, he won the championship in a tournament. In his second movie, his rival challenged him again and he lost. Finally, in his third movie, it showed how upset and devastated he was and how he managed to find courage again to carry on fighting as a boxer. This shows that we should not give up easily as there is always a chance for us to win.

On the second day, Candice told us about the crab friends who pulls us down and the fruitfly friends who pulls us up to success. Again, her question remained in my mind until today. She asked," Are you going to be the crab friend who will pull everyone down with you or the fruitfly friend who will everyone up?" I agreed that I needed to work harder to avoid being a crab friend. Before the day ended, she told us to close our eyes and imagine that we were walking down a path which leads us to our parents and ourselves. This process made everyone cry, including myself.

On the third day, we faced a challenge of stacking chairs. Unfortunately, my class does not seem to be corporative as we were in a chaotic mess and delayed the timing. Candice was very angry that she made us do it more than 5 times all over again. The 6A class seems to have gotten the trick and works well fast.YY taught us the method of speed reading. It was a challenge as there was only a limited amount of time for us to circle the key words and answer questions without referring back to the passage. Finally, it was time to meet our parents in the hall. We gave them a letter to thank them. I saw many people crying but my mother did not cry as she joked about crying before until her tears are all dried up. She said she would not cry anymore. I promised that I would be a filial daughter to her.

That was surely a good learning experience 3-days camp which made me really motivated.

Sungei Buloh Wetlabd Reserve Reflection

Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve is a great place for learning environment. I have learnt many new things about what I do not know. The trip from our school to Sungei Buloh sure took a long time. I was a little restless after sitting inside the bus for so long. However, that did not change my eagerness to enter the Sungei Buloh. This was the very first time I went there.

When I set foot into the entrance, I felt extremely excited. When we were seperated into groups(mine was A3), we met our guide and we greeted her. She brought us in and to a shelter. She told us that we are going to learn about the Mangrove. From then, I paid attention to what she said, some of what she said I had already know while some was still new to me. She also told us that Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve is 130-hectar(measurement for land)! It was so huge!

When we started our journey through the mangrove, i first learnt about the plant adaptations in the mangrove. There was a leaf we tasted from a tree. The leaves were salty! They were actually from the salt water that come from high tide. Each trees have different types of roots.

I also remember a process called vivipary, where seeds germinate and develop into seedlings while the fruits are still attached to the parent plant. The seedlings will then fall and lodge themselves into the mud to grow. Seedlings that fall into the water will be dispersed by the tides. Examples that I have seen learnt are the Rhizophora and Bruguiera.

Next, we walked through the bridge which has rivers beneath us. It was so worrying that I would drop my pen or something valuable. From the bridges, we saw a lot of mudskippers in the river. When we made a shadow in the river, the mudskippers or other fishes will swim quickly away that the water splashes. After that, we took a short break, we had drank some water and had a bite before returning to our journey.

Our guide led us to the next part of the journey which we saw many animals I never got to see. I saw squirrels, horseshoe crabs, snakes and a monkey! The monkey was actually doing its small business at a shelter we were supposed to stop and recap what we have done. Someone made a funny face and the monkey seems to have felt threatened and tried to attack us. Luckily, we managed to escape its attack when it decided to climb across the bridge instead. It was scary.

When we set down at the shelter, someone suddenly started screaming, trying to tell me that there was an insect crawling up my shoes and onto my pants. I quickly stood up and the parent volunteer helped me to swipe of the insect. I was frightened by it and decided to shift to another place to sit.

Finally, it was time to go back to school, I slept in the bus as I was exhausted from the walk. Unfortunately, I did not rest well. The person sitting behind me kept on kicking the chair and standing up. That person even pulled my hair.(accidentally)

Nonetheless, it was a great learning experience and I hope to go there again next time.

Book review 3

Title: Lockie and Dadge

Author: Frank Murphy

Plot:

Lockie was an orphan who has been placed into a foster home. Somehow, he was a misfit and never settled in despite moving into 3 foster homes. At the last foster home, he decided to leave and run away. He meets up with some odd-bods – Dadge and his strange friends, Pasha and Mammy Tallon. When he is with them, he doesn’t feel like an outsider for the very first time.

What you have learnt or notice from the writer of the book about characterizations?

a)Main characters: Lockie, Dadge, Pasha and Mammy Tallon

b)Personality:

Lockie: stubborn, bad tempered, earns for a warm and happy family.

Dadge: daring and kind

Pasha: smart thinking and old fashioned

Mammy Tallon: wise and old fashioned

c) How did the personalities play out in the story to make the story more alive and interesting? Give examples quoted from the books.

Lockie always insisted that what he thought was right and would not even allow others to explain. Despite that, deep in his heart he has earned for a warm and loving family. He did not need to be in a rich family with posh cars and servants. He just wants a happy family.

Dadge was a skinny and frail-looking, with a face more pale than the dark stubble of his unshaven jaws. Yet so, he dares to fight with a man as strong as a bull.

Pasha and Mammy Tallon are husband and wife, both being very old fashioned. They have a difference, which Pasha is smart thinking while Mammy Tallon is a wise lady.

This story shows the relationship of the characters being as close as a family. The author must have understood how it feels like when one loses his/her family.

d) What did you learn from this author about building interesting characters?

I learnt that to make my characters in my story more interesting, I have to plan and understand how the character is like and how they feel.

Style of writing:

a) The author is good at using good descriptive sentences for places.

Eg.

-Clouds the colour of mud covered the sky, and it wasn’t twilight all day, as if the sun had turned its back.

-A wreath of whitish smoke rose from the chimney at the near end and drifted towards them.

b) The author uses other words after a speech instead of ‘said’.

-“Dadge!” Lockie blurted out.

-“Two of them?” Pasha asked in disbelief.

Recommendation:

Quite a few parts on suspense which allows reader to be more absorbed in the story. Lots of dialogues to show how characters are like. Interesting plot and a warm hearted compelling story. Worth to read.

book review 2

Title: Angel Blue

Author: A.J.Butcher

Cover Design: Nick Castle

Photography: Getty Images

Plot:

Lori Angel is a graduate of Deveraux College, a top secret school for teenage spies. She has been on the coast, partying and surfing until a fellow graduate turns up in her apartment dead. Following the clues left behind, agent Angel will be leaded to the most dangerous and unbelievable situations in her life. She will have to face the mysteries and even the undead or even a conflict with a secret society.

What you have learnt or notice from the writer of the book about characterizations?

a)Main characters: Lori Angel

b)Personality:

Lori Angel: brave and resilient.

c) How did the personalities play out in the story to make the story more alive and interesting? Give examples quoted from the books.

Lori Angel faces the awake of the dead Dane Stockdale. She did not hesitate to launch her attack, trying to stop him from hurting or killing others. Despite not having any weapons to attack, she bravely used her powerful fists and feet to stop the undead man. Although knowing that her opponent is not a normal man, she did not give up the possibility of defeating him. She continued thrashing from side to side, kicking at her assailant desperately. She even tried to kick at lower parts of the body customarily avoided, even in combat situations.

The author must have planned about his character very well. He might have done research or gathered information by observing people to bring out the personalities and actions of his characters.

d) What did you learn from this author about building interesting characters?

I learnt that I have to plan how I want my character to be first and observe other people to take them as an example and relate those qualities into my character to build an interesting character.

Style of writing:

a) The author is good at using short sentences to create impact in his style of writing. A reader can learn much from the writing style.

Eg.

-A cackled, again from behind him. Again he whirled. Saw the tramp on time. Relaxed.

-Slow to respond. Stupid. Slow. She was beside him. She was on him. As close as his own breath.

-The no strings kind of good time. Loud music. Bright lights.

b) The author uses other words after a speech instead of ‘said’.

Eg.

-“Try not to worry, Mr President, sir,” Debbie Hunter counseled.

-“Casino. Quieter,” urged Lori.

Recommendation:

Story plot has a lot of suspense. Good to learn from the descriptive phrases or sentences of actions and impacts from the story. Climax is not very interesting though. Not enough excitement.
